The Curious Case of Broken Noses on Ancient Egyptian Statues

Date: 2.00 p.m. - 3.30 p.m. Saturday, 2nd May

£6.50

This is the second of three talks to be held in Somerset this spring by local author and speaker Justin Newland.

Why are the noses broken on so many ancient Egyptian statues? Why deface a statue anyway? And why the nose? Why not the ears or the eyes? It wasn’t only statues that were defaced, friezes were too. While the nasal destructions started during the Old Kingdom, they also occurred during the Middle and New Kingdom. In this talk, Justin explores this curious phenomenon and proposes some remarkable explanations. The talk will appeal to the art lover, the student of history, those fascinated by Egypt, or anyone curious about the enigmas of life.
